Cold and Flu Season

Even though you wouldn’t know it by the weather, we are in the middle of winter.  Unfortunately, that means it’s also cold and flu season.  I know of several families who have passed a winter bug around (sometimes more than once).  Here are a few tips to help prevent those winter bugs:

  • Get a flu vaccination.  You can get a flu vaccination through a shot or nasal spray at your local doctor or pharmacy.  A vaccine can reduce flu illnesses, doctors’ visits, and missed school or work.
  • Wash your hands often.  Colds and flu can be passed through contaminated surfaces, including your hands.  Wash your hands often with soap and warm water for 20 seconds to reduce your chance of contamination.
  • Limit your exposure to infected people.  If you are sick with a cold or flu, please stay home or limit your exposure to other people.  Also, cover your mouth when you cough or sneeze.
  • Practice healthy habits.  Eat a balanced diet, exercise, and get plenty of sleep.  Try to keep your stress levels down.

If you do come down with a cold or flu, be sure to contact your health care professional to start treatment early.  Get plenty of rest and stay hydrated.

I hope you and your family stay healthy this winter season.  For more information about staying healthy, contact the Extension Office at 254-435-2331.
