The All Important Nutrient: H2O

Good news!  This week we are taking a look at a major nutrient that is completely calorie-free!  This is a nutrient that everyone must have to survive.  In fact, you can only last about three days without it.  What is this all-important nutrient?  Water! Most of us probably think of water as just another drink option with a meal.  You might already know that 75% of your body is water, but do you know how much water you lose in a day through normal activity?  Nine cups!  That’s… Read More →

Rainwater Harvesting Program

What could I do with 24685 gallons of water?  I could use it for 6 months of in household water for my spouse and I, which equates to about 70 gallons of water a day each.  I could water our small raised bed garden and containers with 1 inch of water 484 times.  I could supply all the supplemental water our 10 fruit trees and house flowerbeds and landscape trees would need for 1 year. If you are asking where would I get this much water?  I could… Read More →

Bosque County Rainfall

All I can say is thank you Lord!  I was blessed with 6.6 inches of rainfall this past week.   Most of Bosque County received 4 plus inches of rainfall according to the National Weather Service.  What a miracle. As the week progressed, I began to think about rainfall records in July.  I first surmised this was a very unusual event.  A quick review of the rainfall record showed Whitney Dam reporting 6 or more inches in July only twice. These occurrences were in 1973 and 1976.  I initially… Read More →

Don’t Let the Faucet Run Dry

What would you do if you turned on the tap and no water came out? Fortunately, most of us don’t have to worry about that. However, with the limited rainfall and increasing population, water is becoming a commodity in short supply, and the empty tap is possible. There are actions you can take to help reduce the amount of water that you and your family use.  Families need to evaluate their behaviors related to using water.  For example, make sure all family members turn off the water while… Read More →

Crops, Ponds, and Summer Temperatures

With the return of hot June summer temperatures, it did not take long for the crops and forages to start showing their moisture stress.  Even though we had nice rain in late May and early June, the deep moisture is not present to sustain the crops as needed.  Many of the livestock producers in the northern half of the county are concerned about the water levels in their farm ponds.  Many farm ponds are nearing record low levels associated with prior record drought conditions.  Low levels this early… Read More →

Water: The Forgotten Nutrient

As we head into summer and warmer weather, this is a great time to make sure we’re getting enough water.  Did you know that our bodies are made up 75% water? Body organs of all types contain water, including muscle (about 73%), blood (about 83%), and body fat (25%).  Even our bones contain some water.  Water transports nutrients, oxygen and wastes; helps medication to work properly; keeps skin, eyes and mouth moist; helps prevent constipation; and helps temperature regulation in the body.  Every system in our bodies depends… Read More →
