National 4-H Week is October 6-12, 2013. As a part of National 4-H Week, Bosque County 4-H is organizing a “One Day 4-H” community service event in gratitude for the support they have received from local people for many years. Bosque County 4-H would not be thriving without the help of community support.
Texas 4-H is the state’s oldest youth organization. For more than 100 years, it has received many different kinds of support from Texas communities, for programs that help build better kids and create tomorrow’s leaders. In 2009, Texas 4-H decided to set aside one day each fall to give back to the communities, as a way of saying thanks for all your support! Now, in its fifth year, this special day is called “One Day 4-H.” It has become the nation’s largest organized day of community service by 4-H. One Day 4-H is a day for all 4-H members, parents, leaders, organizations, and any community volunteers to step out into their county and say “thank you”.
Bosque County 4-H is planning an exciting event in Valley Mills. With approval from the Valley Mills City Council, they’ll be doing a beautification project at city hall. The Valley Mills Mayor, Jerry Pierce, has personally agreed to assist with the project. The goal is to implement “no-scape” landscaping in the areas surrounding City Hall with drought tolerant plants, so that it will be low maintenance for the city. A small rainwater harvest system will also be installed to maintain the area, in order to save city water and make use of natural resources.
4-H members also plan to present a proclamation for Mayor Pierce to sign and declare the week of October 6-12, 2013 to be National 4-H Week in Valley Mills, Texas.
Bosque County 4-H will be asking for monetary donations from within the county to assist with materials needed for the project. Mayor Pierce has graciously donated the rainwater barrel needed for the rainwater harvesting system.
Everyone in Bosque County is invited and encouraged to participate in this event. You do not have to be a 4-H member in order to volunteer, and all ages are welcome. With the help of the community, Bosque County 4-H members hope to get a lot accomplished on this day! Another purpose of this project is for everyone to come together as a community and work toward a common goal, no matter what differences we may have or what backgrounds we come from. As the 4-H Pledge goes…”I pledge my Head to clearer thinking, my Heart to greater loyalty, my Hands to larger service, my Health to better living. For my club, my community, my country, and my world.” This is a good pledge for us all to live by!
