Home Energy Efficiency

Every year when the weather starts turning cold, I dream of moving to the tropics.  I love the warm days of summer, and I start to get antsy when the temperatures drop below 65 degrees.  Since a move to a tropical island is not very practical, I have to settle for keeping my house warm and toasty.

The key to keeping your house warm in the winter and cool in the summer is to make sure that you are heating and cooling efficiently.  The Energy Department reports that the typical American family spends at least $2,200 a year on home utility bills.  Unfortunately, a lot of the energy we use is wasted through inefficient heating and cooling systems, old appliances, and leaky windows or ducts.

If you are like me and want to stay warm this winter without breaking the bank, check out these energy saving tips for your home.  The Energy Department suggests that you can lower your energy bill up to 25% by following these tips.

  • Install a programmable thermostat to manage heating and cooling systems efficiently.
  • Lower the thermostat on your water heater to 120 degrees.
  • Take short showers instead of baths and use low-flow showerheads.
  • Air dry dishes instead of using the dishwasher drying cycle.
  • Make sure windows and doors are closed when heating or cooling your house.  Check the seals around your windows and doors to make sure they are tight.
  • Look for ENERGY STAR® label on light bulbs, appliances and electronics.  ENERGY STAR® products meet strict efficiency guidelines and will help you to save money in the long term.
