From the Ground Up – Connecting Agriculture and Health

The 2nd From the Ground Up – Connecting Agriculture and Health conference will be held in conjunction with the 55th Blackland Income Growth Conference on Tuesday, December 13, 2016.  The conference will be held at the Extraco Events Center, 4601 Bosque Boulevard in Waco and is sponsored by Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service.

Conference topics will include the domestic and global issue of hunger, food waste, food labeling, and the new Dietary Guidelines.  The conference will also include a presentation that focuses on information all Texans can use to make informed decisions about the food they eat based on truthful, relevant, and accurate information.  The conference will close with a culinary segment that will be provided by the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service – Dinner Tonight team.

The conference will begin at 9:00 am (doors open at 8:30 am) and conclude at 4:30 pm. A catered barbeque lunch is included in the registration.

Julie Borlaug, Associate Director of External Relations at the Borlaug Institute for International Agriculture at Texas A&M University will set the stage for the conference during her presentation on the issue of hunger both domestically and globally.  Dr. Jenna Anding, Extension Specialist and Associate Department Head with the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service, will provide presentations on the topics of food waste and food labeling and Gabriela Proana, Clinical Dietitian with the Central Texas Veterans Health Care System will provide an update on the new Dietary Guidelines.

In addition, Julie Gardner, Community Health Specialist, and Odessa Appel, Wellness Initiatives Extension Assistant, both with AgriLife Extension will close the conference with Path to the Plate, a presentation on the connection between agriculture and health and a Dinner Tonight culinary demonstration.
