4-H Member Success – Roundup

Students from Bosque County were put to the test last week when 10 Bosque County 4-H members competed at Roundup at Texas A&M in College Station. We are extremely proud of them.  Dedication to their respective contests is evident. The students spent several months preparing to compete against youth from all 254 counties in the state of Texas.

Texas 4-H Roundup is a qualifying and invitational event for youth between the ages of 11 and 18 that have successfully placed in a qualifying event at the district level or have signed up to compete in an invitational event at the state level.  County and District Roundup contests are open to 4-H members from ages 9 to 18.  Approximately 50 different contests and workshops test 4-H members on life skills in areas of decision making, public speaking, organization, and working with others.  These contests include such things as Fashion Show, Food Show, an assortment of judging contests, and educational presentations.

At this year’s Roundup, Shelby Crockett won 1st Place in the Educational Presentation category and 5th Place in the Fashion Show. In the Vet Science Skill-A-thon Level II contest Joshua Murphy placed 1st and Caleb Murphy placed 3rd. Congratulations!

Several of the contests are team-based. Our Wool Judging & Evaluation Team composed of Dustin Gant, Jessica Harris and McKenzie Whitney, garnered 9th place in that competition. Winning 11th against all other county teams was the Consumer Decision Making Team, made up of Shelby Crockett, Benjamin Murphy, Caleb Murphy and Joshua Murphy.  In the Leaders 4 Life Skill-A-Thon, team members Dustin Gant, Marti Hanson, Jessica Harris and McKenzie Whitney came in 12th overall. In addition, we want to recognize Emma Guillory, Mattie Guillory for their outstanding performances in the Share the Fun: Solo/Band Competition.

Five of our seniors were also recognized and awarded scholarships.  Highest accolades go to Ashley Cline, Marti Hanson and Joshua Murphy for earning $18,000 Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo Scholarships. Also to be congratulated are Shelby Crockett for receiving the $10,000 Richard Wallrath Educational Foundation Scholarship and Caleb Murphy for being awarded a $1,000 Davidson Family Scholarship. We would like to congratulate them all on a job well done.  Their preparation and representation of Bosque County was commendable.
