Gearing up for the Home Economics Contest at the Central Texas Youth Fair

If you stopped by the Extension office in the last couple weeks, you might have noticed that we’re preoccupied with the Central Texas Youth Fair.  We are already getting excited about it!  There are a few new things to look forward to at the CTYF this year; first and foremost is a new date.  This year the fair will be held February 25-March 1.

One event that I am most excited about is the Home Economics Contest.  This year we added a few new categories that will make for fun projects over the next few months.  Are you into soap making?  We have a new category for handmade soaps, lotions and bath oils.  Did you preserve your summer garden produce?  We have an entire division devoted to canned goods.  If you’re planting a fall/winter garden, we even have categories for vegetables like greens, radishes and dry beans.  If you’re handy with a needle, we have divisions for clothing and textiles where you can enter quilts, garments, cross stitch, or various other projects.  We even have a category for the thrifty shopper who likes to buy used a garment and remake it into something new.  The Home Economics Contest divisions are: Clothing, Textiles, Art, Photography, Crafts, Canned Goods, Homegrown Vegetables, Horticulture, and Baked Goods.  There is something for everyone!

Remember, anyone can enter projects in the Home Economics Contest.  The age categories are:  children age 4-7; juniors age 8-12; seniors age 13-18; and open age 19 years and older.  I would love to see people of all ages in Bosque County enter their quilts, canned goods, and garden produce in the Home Economics event this year.   You can find a full list of categories in the 2014 Central Texas Youth Fair Catalog at https://bosque.agrilife.org/4-h/central-texas-youth-fair/ .  Entries may be turned in to the Extension office, and they should be postmarked by February 1.  Call the Extension office at 254-435-2331 if you have any questions.
